As we learn from Wikipedia, “Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deva of intellect and wisdom.”
It seems Ganesha must have been asleep the other day because neither was intellect and wisdom at play when a bunch of people crowded a boat loaded with a heavy statue of Ganesha nor did Ganesha remove this little obstacle of the boat capsizing, sending at least 12 people to a watery grave:
According to Sharanappa, an eyewitness, 22 youth ventured into the river to immerse the idol. When the coracle reached the centre of the river where the water current was strong, it overturned. Nine of them jumped off and swam to safety.
Superintendent of Police Abhinav Khare told presspersons that overloading of the coracle resulted in the accident.
Now, if I were a God, I guess I’d have a little sympathy for my worshipers, even if they did something terribly stupid like overloading a boat. I guess I’d save them, nonetheless, because, well, they worship me and stuff.
But that’s probably the reason I am not a God.
