I am happy to announce my new e-book which you can download for free here. It’s called Listen, Obey, and Be Blessed – Cults and Freedom of Choice.
The notion of free will has been debated at length by neuroscientists, philosophers, and religious scholars. In stark contrast, many religious cults boldly claim that God created us with free will. But do members of a cult really have freedom of choice?
In Listen, obey, and be blessed, I provide a brief rundown of our understanding of free will, and how it collides with the basic characteristics of a Cult.

To wet your appetite, here is an excerpt from the introduction to the five-thousand words-e-book:
When I was a kid, I loved the Choose your own Adventure-Series. I loved the fact that I could influence the story, that every action I took had a direct influence on the plot. Sometimes I made a bad decision and things went south. But all in all, I was thrilled by the freedom of choice I enjoyed in these books.
When I was a kid, I was in a Cult. Life in a Cult was more like a This is your Adventure, deal with it-book. My parents and the Elders in our community told me that I could choose my path. Basically, these were my options: Do as I was told and live. Or: Choose my own adventure and die.
The Cult told me that God created all humans with free will. I knew the story of Adam and Eve and The Tree, and I knew my own story. Both stories didn’t really feel like free will. Real life was nothing like the Choose your own Adventure-Series. Sure, in these books, some options had dire consequences, but most of the time, I still felt I was in control. But in real life? Not so much.
The subject of free will is one that has accompanied me ever since I was a child. I’ve experienced both worlds: life in a Cult and life beyond.
In this e-book, I would like to lay down my thoughts on freedom of choice and how life in a Cult differs from life in general.
